Alpha José Hernández Middle School, San Jose:

The team of three middle school math teachers works with many students who have recently arrived in the United States or have grown up in the U.S. speaking Spanish or Vietnamese as their primary language. To hone their approach to working with this population of students, the team will engage with Project GLAD (Guided Language Acquisition Design), a model of professional development focused on the area of language acquisition and literacy. The team will also attend workshops about using growth mindset to promote conceptual understanding of math. Their goal is to merge these professional development sessions in order to identify and create best practices for helping ELL students access and master grade level math standards, so they are prepared for careers in STEAM fields.
