John O’Connell High School, San Francisco

The team of five teachers in the high school math department seeks to authentically integrate career pathways into math curricula, fulfilling Common Core Standards while amplifying student engagement. Their school provides vocational and project-based learning opportunities for upperclassmen through integrated labs. In order to enhance students’ transition into and success in these labs, the team will redesign geometry and algebra curricula to highlight their industry connections. To facilitate this, teachers will collaborate with model high school PBL programs integrating math, as well as with professionals from health, engineering/design and culinary firms. Finally, the team will organize a summit to share learnings and develop new PBL curricula.
