Our project grows from teachers’ recognition that we are not yet serving Mam-speaking students with the care, understanding or respect they deserve. In partnership with Unión Maya, teachers at five East Oakland schools will engage in community-led professional learning on Mam language and Maya culture. Together, teachers and Union Maya youth fellows will co-create trilingual picture books (Mam, Spanish, English) rooted in Maya proverbs and stories, along with video read-alouds for classrooms across Oakland. With their new knowledge and relationships with Maya leaders, partner teachers will become advocates and ambassadors for Maya families at their schools and across the district.
